Start of the human-led migration
Newsletter 14/08/2018
All birds from the colonies in Kuchl and Burghausen already left their breeding areas two weeks ago, forming one big group of Northern Bald Ibises that will fly towards south independently.
Our hand-raised birds, who were again trained to follow the microlight aircrafts in Hödingen/Überlingen at Lake Constance, are also prepared for their first flight above the alps.
“Within this season, we had 26 training sessions. It was a very exciting experience, because the group of hand-raised birds first had a mind of its own. But at some point, they realised that they should follow us, and the flights were really great. I’m really looking forward to the migration and I hope that all will go well”, says Anne-Gabriela Schmalstieg, one of the two foster parents.
Currently, the last preparations for the human-led migration are ongoing, all equipment is going to be packed, to ensure a smooth flight of the first stage.
The human-led migration will start on August 15 at around 8 o’clock am. We’ll depart from the training camp in Hödingen and fly over 100 km towards our first destination, Andelsbuch in Vorarlberg.
As in the previous years, our flight path can be followed via Live-Track; additionally, we’ll publish the latest news and pictures on facebook and our website.
