Finally: The last stage of the human-led migration 2014 is mastered. We´ve reached our destination!
Dear Friends of the LIFE+ Northern Bald Ibis project,
Unfortunately, yesterday´s trip was unexpectedly turbulent, and our joy was preceded by deep concern. We took off at 07:30 am from Borgo San Lorenzo and were immediately carried onward by a strong current. The helicopter with the camera crew followed us. At a maximum rate of 100 km/h, we passed Florence and after less than an hour we had already reached San Gimignano.
Then, on our way towards Siena, a serious misunderstanding happened between us and the helicopter crew. As a result, we landed on a nearby meadow to give the film crew some time to refuel their helicopter although this wasn´t actually necessary. The high vegetal cover and the direct proximity of the helicopter might have been the cause for 12 of our 14 birds to take off and to fly back again, heading to Borgo San Lorenzo. Walter and Corinna continued to fly towards the WWF Oasi Laguna di Orbetello, followed by the two remaining birds. The other 12 birds arrived at 15:00 pm at Borgo San Lorenzo, where they were already longingly awaited by Anne. They were subsequently transported to the WWF Oasi and so didn´t fly the last 100 km from Siena to the wintering area.
This might be a little flaw in our otherwise absolutely perfectly carried out human-led migration 2014. But as we know from experience, the migration behaviour of those 12 birds won´t be influenced by the missing track. At the end of the day, we´ve achieved an exceedingly positive result, which is the success of a great, great team, above all Corinna and Anne, Walter, Edith, Bernhard, Elisabeth, Pablo, Barbara, Lisa, Angelika, Christian, Markus, Max, Emmanuel and Valentin.
