Imminent start of HLM 2014
Newsletter, 24.08.2014
Dear Friends of the LIFE+ Northern Bald Ibis project,
By now, we`ve been waiting for a week here at Grödig/Salzburg for the start of the human-led migration. Now it seems that on Monday 25 August the weather conditions will be good enough to finally start with the first stage, the crossing of the Alps.
The conditions will probably be not ideal, but with our perfectly trained group of birds we still have a realistic chance to pass the entire Alps and the Karawanken within a day, up to an airport at Osoppo/Italy. The length of the track is 200 km. The highest passages are on approximately 2000 m above sea level. The flight will be a chilly adventure, as the temperature on this sea level will be around 4°C. A stopover at the airfield of Mauterndorf is planned to refuel the aircrafts.
In the course of our training flights at Salzburg, a German film crew accompanied us three times to film from a helicopter with an external camera. They will join us during the migration, too. The shots will be used for the series “Deutschland von oben” (“Germany from above”) and the two-part documentary “TerraX Vogelflug” (“Terra X bird flight”). During our joint flights, we intend to pass some popular locations, such as Venice and Florence. It is of particular importance that those shots are also used for larger TV productions in Italy, because the media presence in Italy is an essential part of our campaign against illegal bird hunting.
